Australian Maya Joint Scores First Career Title at 2025 Morocco Open
Joint prevailed against Jaqueline Cristian of Romania in the final.
Maya Joint of Australia, 19, defeated Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, 26, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Morocco Open in Rabat, Morocco (a WTA 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 6-2 in favor of Joint.
This was the first match Cristian and Joint have ever played against each other on the WTA Tour. Today’s victory was the first title Joint has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the first title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, she becomes the first player to win her first title during the 2025 season to date. That means her maiden title came from a clay court event at the 250-level. Moreover, she becomes the first player representing Australia to win the title in Rabat since the event joined the tour in 2001. And finally, she won the doubles title in Rabat yesterday with her partner Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia.
Heading into this tournament, Cristian was ranked as the Number 74 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Joint carried the Number 78 designation. By winning in Rabat, Joint has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Cristian has picked up 163 points.
Peyton Stearns of the United States (No. 28) was the tournament’s reigning champion. She withdrew from the main draw after reaching the semifinals in Rome last week. Furthermore, both Cristian and Joint were unseeded players at this year’s event.
Joint arrived in the final after winning against protected ranking Ana Konjuh of Croatia (No. 508), ninth seed Katie Volynets of the United States (No. 64), fourth seed Ann Li of the United States (No. 57), and Ajla Tomljanović of Australia (No. 79). This was the first WTA final she has contested and her first at a 250-level event.
In the other half of the main draw, Cristian defeated wildcard Yelyzaveta Kotliar of Ukraine (No. 585), protected ranking Aliona Bolsova of Spain (No. 340), wildcard Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia (No. 543), and second seed Camila Osorio of Colombia (No. 55). This was the second WTA final she has competed in and her second at a 250-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 26. The tour will then play one tournament from May 25-June 8: the French Open in Paris, France (a Grand Slam event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Iga Świątek of Poland (No. 5) is the three-time reigning champion of the French Open. She is trying to become the first player in the Open Era to win the Grand Slam title in four consecutive years. As the fifth seed this year, she will face off against Rebecca Šramková of Slovakia (No. 41) in the first round.
Cristian and Joint will also be contesting the Grand Slam in Paris as unseeded players. In the first round, Cristian will battle Kimberly Birrell of Australia (No. 63) and Joint will once again play Tomljanović.
