McCartney Kessler of the United States, 25, defeated Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, 25, to win the Women’s Singles title at the 2025 Nottingham Open in Nottingham, United Kingdom (a WTA 250 event). The score in the final was 6-4 and 7-5 in favor of Kessler.
This was the third match Kessler and Yastremska have played against each other on the WTA Tour - with both players winning one of their prior meetings. Today’s victory was the second title Kessler has won on the 2025 WTA Tour and the third title of her career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the first title she has claimed from a grass court event and her third at a 250-level tournament. Moreover, she becomes the first player representing the United States to win the title in Nottingham since the event returned to the tour in 2011.
Heading into this tournament, Kessler was ranked as the Number 42 tennis player on the 2025 WTA Tour, while Yastremska carried the Number 46 designation. By winning in Nottingham, Kessler has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Yastremska has picked up 163 points.
Katie Boulter of the United Kingdom (No. 39) was the tournament’s two-time reigning champion. This year as the event’s eighth seed, she lost in the quarterfinals against Kessler. Furthermore, Kessler and Yastremska competed in the main draw as unseeded players.
Kessler arrived in the final after winning against first seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil (No. 21), protected ranking Zhu Lin of China (No. 309), Boulter, and Rebecca Šramková of Slovakia (No. 38). This was the fourth WTA final she has contested - all at 250-level events.
In the other half of the main draw, Yastremska defeated ninth seed Olga Danilović of Serbia (No. 37), qualifier Antonia Ružić of Croatia (No. 98), fifth seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada (No. 30), and sixth seed Magda Linette of Poland (No. 31). This was the seventh WTA final she has competed in and her fifth at a 250-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 WTA Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 23. The tour will then play two tournaments from June 23-29: the Bad Homburg Open in Bad Homburg, Germany (a WTA 500 event) and the Eastbourne Open in Eastbourne, United Kingdom (a WTA 250 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Diana Shnaider of Russia (No. 12) is the reigning champion at the Bad Homburg Open. She is looking to defend the title as the sixth seed at this year’s event. In the first round, she will face off against Donna Vekić of Croatia (No. 22). Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina of Australia (No. 16) is the reigning champion at the Eastbourne Open. She is also attempting a title defense as the top seed at this year’s event. She will battle Lulu Sun of Australia (No. 44) in the first round.
Furthermore, Kessler will not be competing anywhere this week. And finally, Yastremska has received special exempt entry into the main draw of the Eastbourne Open. In the first round, she will once again play against Linette as the event’s fifth seed.
