Republican Tate Reeves Receives Second Term as Governor of Mississippi
The incumbent faced off against Democrat Brandon Presley.
The general election occurred today to elect the Governor of Mississippi. A candidate needs to achieve a 50%+1 majority to be elected today. Otherwise, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff in a few weeks.
One-term Republican incumbent Governor Tate Reeves has been declared the winner. The race was called in his favor as he’s currently leading with 50.97% against Democrat Brandon Presley with 47.67% and Independent Gwendolyn Gray with 1.36%. 820,213 votes have been counted.
Reeves has served as the Governor of Mississippi since January 2020. He previously served as the Treasurer of Mississippi from January 2004 to January 2012 and as the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from January 2012 to January 2020.
Presley has represented the Northern District on the Mississippi Public Service Commission since January 2008. He previously served as Mayor of Nettleton, Mississippi from 2001 to 2007.
Reeves’ re-election to a second four-year term as Governor will maintain a Republican trifecta of government control in Mississippi. Elections to the State Senate and State House of Representatives were also held today - with Republicans maintaining majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
Mississippi was one of only three states electing their governors in 2023 - alongside Kentucky and Louisiana.
