Sebastián Báez Victorious in Consecutive Weeks After Taking 2024 Chile Open Title
Báez just won the Rio Open title a week ago.
Sebastián Báez, 23, of Argentina defeated Alejandro Tabilo, 26, of Chile to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2024 Chile Open in Santiago, Chile (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 3-6, 6-0 and 6-4 in favor of Báez.
This was the third match Báez and Tabilo have played against each other on the ATP - with both players having won a prior meeting. Today’s victory is the second title Báez has won on the 2024 ATP Tour and the sixth title of his career in single’s competition. He has now been victorious in consecutive weeks this season after claiming the Rio Open title a week ago. Moreover, he is now tied with Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 3) and Ugo Humbert of France (No. 18) with most titles in 2024 so far - with two apiece.
Heading into this tournament, Báez was ranked as the Number 21 tennis player on the 2024 ATP Tour, while Tabilo carried the Number 51 designation. By winning in Santiago, Báez has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Tabilo has picked up 165 points.
Nicolás Jarry of Chile (No. 22) was the tournament’s reigning champion. This year though, he lost to Corentin Moutet of France (No. 140) in the quarterfinals. Báez and Tabilo were the event’s second and fourth seeds, respectively. This was the second time Báez has contested the final in Santiago after finishing as the runner-up in 2022.
The Chile Open allowed the top four seeds to advance directly to the second round - which applied to both finalists. Báez arrived in the final after winning against Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru (No. 119), Jaume Munar of Spain (No. 70), and Pedro Martínez of Spain (No. 101). He prevailed against the event’s fourth and eighth seeds to win the title.
In the other half of the main draw, Tabilo defeated Tomás Barrios Vera of Chile (No. 111), Luciano Darderi of Italy (No. 80), and Moutet. Notably, he didn’t face another seeded player until the final.
The revised rankings for the 2024 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, March 4. The tour will then play one tournament between March 6 and 17: the Indian Wells Open in Indian Wells, California (an ATP Masters 1000 event). The competition will be played on hard courts.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 2) is the reigning champion at the Indian Wells Open. He is looking to defend the title as the tournament’s second seed this year.
