Taylor Fritz Kicks Off Grass Court Season With Stuttgart Title
The American faced off against Alexander Zverev of Germany in the final.
Taylor Fritz of the United States, 27, defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany, 28, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2025 Stuttgart Open in Stuttgart, Germany (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 6-3 and 7-6 (7-0 tiebreaker) in favor of Fritz.
This was the 13th match Fritz and Zverev have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with Fritz leading 7-5 in their head-to-head. Today’s victory was the first title Fritz has won on the 2025 ATP Tour and the ninth title of his career in single’s competition. Notably, this was the fourth title he has claimed from a grass court event and his 12th from a 250-level tournament. And finally, he becomes the fourth player representing the United States to win the title in Stuttgart during the Open Era - joining Vitas Gerulaitis in 1980, Andre Agassi in 1988, and Frances Tiafoe in 2023.
Heading into this tournament, Zverev was ranked as the Number 3 tennis player on the 2025 ATP Tour, while Fritz carried the Number 7 designation. By winning in Stuttgart, Fritz has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Zverev has picked up 165 points.
Jack Draper of the United Kingdom (No. 4) was the tournament’s reigning champion. He opted not to compete anywhere this week. Furthermore, Zverev and Fritz were the event’s first and second seeds, respectively. The Top 4 seeds received byes into the second round of competition.
Fritz arrived in the final after winning against Quentin Halys of France (No. 47), qualifier Márton Fucsovics of Hungary (No. 112), and fourth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada (No. 29). This was the 17th ATP final he has competed in and his 12th at a 250-level event. He won the title without losing a set or having his serve broken throughout the tournament.
In the other half of the main draw, Zverev defeated Corentin Moutet of France (No. 91), sixth seed Brandon Nakashima of the United States (No. 31), and third seed Ben Shelton of the United States (No. 12). This was the 39th ATP final he has contested and his 11th at a 250-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2025 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, June 16. The tour will then play two tournaments from June 16-22: the Halle Open in Halle, Germany (an ATP 500 event) and the Queen’s Club Championships in London, United Kingdom (an ATP 500 event). Both competitions will be played on grass courts.
Jannik Sinner of Italy (No. 1) is the reigning champion at the Halle Open. He is looking to defend the title as the event’s top seed this year. In the first round, he will face off against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann of Germany (No. 135). Meanwhile, Tommy Paul of the United States (No. 8) is the reigning champion at the Queen’s Club Championships. However, he has withdrawn from the main draw with an abdominal strain.
Furthermore, Zverev will be competing as the second seed at the Halle Open. In the first round, he will battle Marcos Giron of the United States (No. 44). And finally, Fritz will play as the third seed at the Queen’s Club Championships. In the first round, he will combat qualifier Corentin Moutet of France (No. 91).
