Bryan Logan Keeps Oklahoma Senate District 8 for Republicans
The state also held two Republican runoffs for vacancies in the State House.
The special election occurred today in Oklahoma to fill a vacancy in the State Senate. The Democratic and Republican candidates were selected through primaries in March and runoffs in April.
The special election for Oklahoma Senate District 8 was called after State Senator Roger Thompson, a Republican, resigned after being removed as a committee chair. He represented this district from November 2014 to November 2024. After competitive elections in 2014 and 2018, Thompson was re-elected unopposed in November 2022.
Oklahoma Senate District 8 covers Okmulgee, Okfuskee, and McIntosh Counties. During the 2024 presidential election, Republican Donald Trump carried District 8 by a 75-24 margin against Democrat Kamala Harris.
Oklahoma Senate (40 Republicans, 8 Democrats):
For District 8, Republican Bryan Logan won with 61.6% (3,083) against Democrat Nathan Brewer with 29.7% (1,484) and Independent Steve Sanford with 8.7% (436). 5,003 votes counted.
Elsewhere, the Republican runoffs occurred today to finish the selection of candidates for two special elections to fill vacancies in the State House of Representatives. The runoffs were ordered after no candidates received 50%+1 of the vote during the primaries in April.
The special election for Oklahoma State House District 71 was called after State Representative Amanda Swope, a Democrat, resigned to become Director of the Tulsa Office of Tribal Policy and Partnerships. She represented this district from November 2022 to January 2025. She was re-elected unopposed in November 2024.
State House District 71 resides entirely within the city of Tulsa, covering Riverside Drive from downtown to just past 71st Street.
Oklahoma State House District 71 Runoff:
Beverly Atteberry won the Republican nomination with 66.2% (147) against Tania Garza with 33.8% (75). 222 votes counted.
Amanda Clinton previously won the Democratic primary for District 71 with 51.3% against three other candidates. The special election between her and Atteberry will occur on June 10, 2025.
The special election for Oklahoma State House District 74 was called after State Representative Mark Vancuren, a Republican, resigned to become a Deputy Commissioner of Tulsa County. He represented this district from November 2018 to January 2025. He was re-elected 76.2-23.8 against Independent Aaron Brent in November 2024.
State House District 74 resides in the city of Owasso in Tulsa County and also features part of Collinsville.
Oklahoma State House District 74 Runoff:
Kevin Wayne Norwood won the Republican nomination with 51.5% (757) against Sheila Vancuren with 48.5% (714). 1,471 votes counted.
Amy Hossain was the only candidate to run in the Democratic primary. The special election between her and Norwood will also occur on June 10, 2025.
