Learner Tien Claims His First Clay Court Title at 2026 Geneva Open
The American battled Mariano Navone of Argentina in the final.
Learner Tien of the United States, 20, defeated Mariano Navone of Argentina, 25, to win the Men’s Singles title at the 2026 Geneva Open in Geneva, Switzerland (an ATP 250 event). The score in the final was 3-6, 6-3, and 7-5 in favor of Tien.
This was the third match Navone and Tien have played against each other on the ATP Tour - with both players winning one of their prior meetings. Today’s victory was the first title Tien has won on the 2026 ATP Tour and the second title of his career in singles competition. Notably, this was the first title he has claimed from a clay court event and his second from a 250-level event. Moreover, he becomes the first player representing the United States to win the title in Geneva since the event returned to the tour in 2015.
Heading into this tournament, Tien was ranked as the Number 20 tennis player on the 2026 ATP Tour, while Navone carried the Number 42 designation. By winning in Geneva, Tien has received 250 points in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Navone has picked up 165 points.
Novak Djokovic of Serbia (No. 4) was the tournament’s reigning champion. He didn’t play anywhere this week. Furthermore, Tien was the event’s fourth seed while Navone entered the main draw as an unseeded player. The top four seeds received byes into the second round of competition.
Tien arrived in the final after winning against wildcard Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece (No. 82), Alex Michelsen of the United States (No. 41), and second seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan (No. 10). This was the third ATP final he has contested and his second at a 250-level event.
In the other half of the main draw, Navone defeated Marco Trungelliti of Argentina (No. 81), third seed Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom (No. 22), eighth seed Jaume Munar of Spain (No. 39), and sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway (No. 17). This was the fourth ATP final he has competed in and his third at a 250-level event.
The revised rankings for the 2026 ATP Tour will be officially released on Monday, May 25. The tour will next play one tournament from May 24-June 7: the French Open in Paris, France (the season’s second Grand Slam event). The competition will be played on clay courts.
Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (No. 2) is the two-time reigning champion at the French Open. He will not be defending his title this year due to a wrist injury.
And finally, Navone and Tien will be competing in the Grand Slam as well. Tien will be the event’s 18th seed while Navone will be an unseeded player. In the first round, Tien will battle Cristian Garín of Chile (No. 116) while Navone will face off against Jenson Brooksby of the United States (No. 60).
